José Maurício holds a PhD in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He works with social theory, critical theory and political sociology. He was awarded the Anneliese Maier Forschungpreis from Fundação Alexander von Humboldt (2018-2023).

His latest books in English are Authoritarian Collectivism and ‘Real Socialism’: Twentieth-century Trajectory, Twentieth-first Century Issues (London: Anthem, 2021), Critical Theory and Political Modernity (New York: Palgrave, 2019) and Emancipation and History: The Return of Social Theory (Leiden: Brill, 2017).
