Originally a graduate of the \u00c9cole Polytechnique de Paris (X64), he has been working in urban sociology since 1967. He spent most of his research career at the CNRS in France, initially linked to the CSU (Center de Sociologie Urbaine) and currently to the CSO (Observatoire Sociologique du Changement) of Sciences Po Paris, where he was professor of urban sociology. It began by studying in France the production of housing complexes, urban planning processes and inequalities in the distribution of collective equipment, focusing on the comparative study of local urban policies and contributing to the international debate on decentralization policies. He participated in the discussion of the social and urban effects of globalization in large cities, criticizing the dualistic model and underlining the continued growth of the middle strata.
