The students enrolled in any of our masters courses will have to complete 41 (forty one) credits, obeying the following norms:

Attend to two compulsory subjects on Theory offered by their respective program (Political Theory I and II for Political Science; Sociological Theory I and II for Sociology), respectively in the first and in the second semesters of the masters course (8 credits in total);

Attend to the Quantitative Methodology “Lego I” subject in the first semester of the masters course (4 credits);

Attend to 5 elective subjects of their respective program (20 credits in total).

Attend to 1 external subject from another postgraduate program other than the one in which they are enrolled (4 credits);

Undertake 1 teaching internship (1 credit);

Defend the masters dissertation (4 credits);

In face of the reading load and the expected activities for the postgraduate courses, we advise the masters students not to enroll in more than three subjects each semester and to enroll in at least two subjects in the first three semesters. All the required credits, except the masters dissertation defense, must be met until the third academic semester of the masters course.

The course has the suggested duration of 24 months. Any time limit extensions must be formally requested to the postgraduate office and the postgraduate program coordination.

All of the students must be aware of the enrollment deadline in each academic semester.

PhD

The Political Science and Sociology PhD courses encourage their students to do their research activities and to present their results in many seminars, besides attending to the regular subjects.The students enrolled in any of our PhD courses will have to complete 32 (thirty two) credits, obeying the following norms:

Attend to the Exemplary Studies subject, necessarily in the first academic semester (4 credits);

Attend to the Thesis Project Seminar subject, necessarily in the second academic semester (no credit);

Attend to two Thesis Seminar subjects, necessarily between the fifth and the eighth academic semesters (no credit). The passing grade is 5,0 (five).

It is mandatory the minimum frequency of 75% (seventy five percent) at the classes (the penalty for the non-compliance is the failing by fault).

The student will be dismissed of their program if they incur in any of the following cases: a) to plagiarize or adulterate data in any presented academic work; b) to not fulfill the activities planned in the research project schedule; c) to fail thesis project seminar; d) to fail thesis seminar; e) to fail regular subjects two times; f) to not defend the masters dissertation or PhD thesis on the granted time; g) to have the masters dissertation or PhD thesis disapproved.

Scholarships

Every year IESP-UERJ makes an effort towards the funding agencies (mainly CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ) with the goal of grating scholarships for all of it’s students, which is not always possible. In return, the scholarship holders should dedicate themselves to the research activities and the offered courses, and they can’t fail any subject or obtain a semester mean grade lower than 7,0 (seven), under penalty of losing their scholarship.

The postgraduate program coordinators of each program must arbitrate any doubt or the enforcement of the afore-mentioned rules.
