]]>The Luso-Brazilian fraternity, based on shared language and historical and cultural affinities, underpins the official narrative on relations between Brazil and Portugal. This book critically assesses whether and how this discourse has influenced each country’s foreign policy issues and bilateral interests and contacts since the late twentieth century. After all, of how much rhetoric and how much real potential is the dialogue between these sister-countries made of?

]]>Assuming that the predictions of a change of course in the federal government are plausible, that there will be no attempts on the lives of the main candidates – in a context of increasing political violence – and that the institutions of electoral democracy will guarantee a peaceful transition of power, what might be expected in terms of foreign policy from an eventual Lula government, given the rather negative record of Bolsonaro’s diplomacy?

]]>The processes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries have positioned Latin America in the contemporary world, together with the part of the world with which it has more similarities and political connections: Europe and the United States. Latin America shares the same problems, without clear solutions, in addition to having little money. However, we must be particularly attentive to political issues, actively addressing them, especially with regard to the democratization of democracy.

]]>In a precise analysis of the contemporary Brazilian political context – without, however, disregarding the international scenario – this work undertakes a true radiography of the radical right-wing populism of the Bolsonaro government. It can be characterized by a “reactionary idea of restoration of order” prior to the country’s re-democratization process; by the massive presence of military personnel in the administration; by the adherence to negationism and speeches based “on the language of affections or passions”; by the promotion of advantages amongst family members; by the conversion of reactionary values “in terms of public policies”; and by the identification of President Bolsonaro as an authentic representative of the cult of family and traditions of the Brazilian people.

]]>“Bolsonaro’s plans for his foreign policy next term are nonexistent, in the sense that he may take actions in response to lobbying from certain interest groups, but they do not amount to a cohesive policy narrative,” Milani said. “He has rooted many of his public policies, including foreign policy, in an idea of deconstruction, of destruction of the past for the sake of rebuilding an ideal Brazilian society; it’s not rooted in reality or history. That’s why some days Bolsonaro may be a friend of Washington and some days a friend of Moscow.”
